I receive not honour from men….How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
JOHN 5:41, 44
Like we established yesterday, only God is the authentic source of all honour. Men do not have what it takes to honour other men. Honour from men is usually temporal and circumstantial. They may honour you today and despise you tomorrow. Remember the classic case of JESUS’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the same mouths that shouted “Hosanna, blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord”, the same people who spread out their garments for the colt JESUS rode on, few days later were shouting, “Crucify Him.”That is man for you.
The day they cannot get from you the benefits that made them honour you, the honour they give you ceases. That is why people who seek honour from men usually end up frustrated. Look at the man Haaman, he was an honourable man, even the king honoured him, as well as both the young and the old of the land but as long as Mordecai the Jew, a gateman at the king’s palace, did not honour him, he was not satisfied and so, he did everything unjust to gain the honour of Mordecai and this desire to have Mordecai’s honour at all costs pushed him into his waterloo.
Naaman, the leprous general of the Syrian army wanted honour from Prophet Elisha which would have costed him his healing had his servant not intervened. The Prophet of God gave him instructions to go dip himself in River Jordan seven times and he was angry, first that Elisha could not as much as come out to see him and secondly that he was asked to go and dip himself in a dirty river.
Friend, seeking honour from men kills. Understand that we are not called to seek honour from men. When you seek honour from men, you will miss the honour of God and have many reasons to disobey HIM through your life’s journey.
