But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
LUKE 1:13-17
John the Baptist came as an answer to prayers with a clearly defined purpose to fulfill. His assignment was specifically detailed in verses 16 and 17 of our opening Scripture – “And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Just like John, everyone born into the world has something very specific that he or she is sent to the world to do. Everyone person sent to this world has very defined assignments and that includes you. Before you were born, your assignment for life was already determined. John’s assignment was not to come and preach every message, his message was very definite.
There is a definite assignment for you to carry out in this world. You are not just in this world to look for food to eat; you are not here to wear clothes. You are not here to build houses; no, it is not about driving cars. You are a man or a woman on a mission, a definite mission. Real achievement is accomplishing the specific tasks and purposes for which you were born. It is not about name, fame, money, possession, power, position.
Many people have confined and limited their entire existence to living for survival. So right from birth till death, there is no deliberate attempt to define purpose, they end up chasing what is not important. They end up chasing the things which would have come to them effortlessly if they were able to focus on what matters the most – their life’s assignment. They run around till the day death comes and people gather and cry. What was his life about? What difference did he make? Why was he born? These questions remain unanswered and that ends the story.
Multitudes have left planet earth without discovering that they were so special to God, that they were so unique to God. The uniqueness of each individual is a function of his or her unique assignment. Until you discover it, then you are just like anybody else. It is as good as you just being among the number of humans alive, a part of the world’s population figure. Stop the chase; don’t spend your life pursuing what others spend their lives pursuing. Find out what your life is about and commit yourself to fulfilling it, totally depending on God.
